I have just finished reading a report which stated that around one percent of the adult population in the UK has a stammer. Now to some of the readers of this article this may seem like quite a small number however it is actually a massive amount of people.
During recent years the problem of stammering has been big news with people such as the pop singer Gareth Gates bravely attempting to make his way to the top despite having a stammer. I am a person that has managed to eradicate a stammer from my own speech and I now run The How To Stop Stammering Centre. I am often asked which are the most popular forms of stammering therapy. Many people who have a stammer will start off by visiting their local speech and language therapist; mainly because it is normally free from charge. This form of therapy however is rarely of any real benefit as the speech therapists themselves freely admit to being unable to offer any form of "stammering cure". This is not to say that this form of therapy is not worth trying at the outset, it is free after all and may well prove to of help even if it does not provide the complete solution. To obtain the complete solution people who stammer normally attend a more specialised form of stammering therapy. These come in the way of an intensive one-to-one speech course; a course which is held over a 2,3 or 5 day period. I personally run such a course myself at my centre in England and they are extremely popular and prove to be of great benefit to those who attend. As well as the intensive courses I also offer a number of self help stammering treatment options; these include an e-book, an audio book and a 70 minute DVD.
